Italian-Style Chestnuts at Home
🏠 Cuisine: Italian 🍽️ Course: Snack 👥 Servings: 4
Inspired by the Italian street-style chestnuts I love — roasted perfectly in the air fryer at home! Chestnut season is here! Inspired by Italian street-style roasted chestnuts, this sweet–savory recipe gives you soft, flavorful chestnuts at home. Air-frying gives them that perfect roasted texture, soft inside, slightly crispy outside — just like on the streets of Italy at your home! Here’s the simplest way to cook chestnuts at home — wash, score, boil, and finish in the air fryer for perfect texture. A cozy and comforting treat for cold days.
Instructions
- Rinse chestnuts well to remove any dirt.
- Score a cross on each chestnut. Place a chestnut inside a small lid for grip. Use a knife and tap lightly with a rubber hammer. Make a clear “X” on the flat side — this helps them open while cooking.
- Arrange chestnuts in a pan with the X-side up. Add a drizzle of oil, ½ tsp salt, and 1 tsp honey (optional).
- Pour ½ cup water into the pan, just enough to partially submerge the chestnuts. Cover and cook until the water is fully absorbed and chestnuts soften (approximately 20 minutes).
- Transfer the chestnuts to an air fryer and cook at 170°C for 7–8 minutes. This gives a slightly crispy exterior and soft interior — like Italian street roasting.
- Serve warm. Perfect cozy winter snack or dessert.
