Turn your whole wheat artisan dough into these soft, cheesy, buttery Garlic Cheese Buns — they’re so fluffy inside and loaded with garlic flavor! This recipe includes instructions for making the whole wheat pizza dough from scratch, which serves as the base for these delicious buns.

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, instant yeast, and salt.
  2. Gradually add 800–810 ml of room-temperature water and knead the mixture until it forms a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  3. Add 1–2 tablespoons of olive oil while continuing to knead the dough until it becomes smooth.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 3–4 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. While the dough is rising or once it's ready, prepare the garlic butter mix. In a small bowl, combine the 3–4 tablespoons of softened butter, 3 grated garlic cloves, and ½ teaspoon of oregano. Mix well.
  6. Take half of the prepared whole wheat dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  7. For each piece of dough, flatten it slightly and place one small mozzarella cube and ¼ teaspoon of the prepared garlic butter mix in the center.
  8. Carefully seal the dough around the filling, shaping it into a smooth bun. Place the sealed buns on a greased baking tray.
  9. Lightly brush the tops of the buns with some of the remaining garlic butter mix.
  10. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake the buns for 25–30 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  12. Once baked, immediately brush the buns again with any remaining garlic butter for an extra burst of flavor.
