Turn your whole wheat artisan dough into these soft, cheesy, buttery Garlic Cheese Buns — they’re so fluffy inside and loaded with garlic flavor! This recipe includes instructions for making the whole wheat pizza dough from scratch, which serves as the base for these delicious buns.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour, instant yeast, and salt.
- Gradually add 800–810 ml of room-temperature water and knead the mixture until it forms a soft, slightly sticky dough.
- Add 1–2 tablespoons of olive oil while continuing to knead the dough until it becomes smooth.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 3–4 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising or once it's ready, prepare the garlic butter mix. In a small bowl, combine the 3–4 tablespoons of softened butter, 3 grated garlic cloves, and ½ teaspoon of oregano. Mix well.
- Take half of the prepared whole wheat dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- For each piece of dough, flatten it slightly and place one small mozzarella cube and ¼ teaspoon of the prepared garlic butter mix in the center.
- Carefully seal the dough around the filling, shaping it into a smooth bun. Place the sealed buns on a greased baking tray.
- Lightly brush the tops of the buns with some of the remaining garlic butter mix.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the buns for 25–30 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Once baked, immediately brush the buns again with any remaining garlic butter for an extra burst of flavor.
